One of things that you notice when you travel with a seasoned business traveler is that they have habits worked out after dozens of business trips making sure they don’t have problems on the road. Learning to be safe in this world has to become second nature for all of us. When you learn to drive a car, its second nature to buckle your seat belt and check your blind spot when you change lanes. But early in your life as a driver, you learned the need for those precautions, sometimes the hard way.

A scenic hill station nestled in the Kumaon hills, Nainital is renowned for its idyllic boat rides. Though said to be crowded to the point of claustrophobia during peak tourist season, luckily when I first stepped into its emerald realm in early June, it was quiet and tranquil. The history of this sleepy town sails over the surface of the Naini Lake. According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati wedded Lord Shiva despite her father’s disapproval. One day, the king held a sacred yagna and did not invite Lord Shiva. Parvati demanded an explanation, and on receiving insults, threw herself in the sacrificial fire.

It may sound strange but gap years are a bit like parachute jumps; they’re only great fun if you’ve packed everything! If you jump on the nearest plane with an empty rucksack and plan while you’re in the air, you won’t have such a good time. You wouldn’t walk into an exam hall without doing your revision and it’s not a great idea to board a plane without a pretty good idea of where you’re going and what sort of gap year you’re going to have. Many would argue that the more spontaneous the trip the more fun; we know that travelling is at its most exhilarating when you’re not quite sure where it’s going to take you. Unfortunately it’s also at its most scary when you have no plan at all; the best sort of travelling, like the best bit of a donut, lies somewhere in the middle.
